I figured it out! The pedal and the pad must be set up on the same midi channel.

I've been tweaking my mandala template in Battery 3 to play more like the virtual brain. The standard velocity to volume ratio does not feel right to me. My solution has been to make a default compressor setting with increased volume on the low velocities and decreased volume on the high velocities....
