Battery 4 and V3 functionality

Post by yamahasca »

I’ve used the Mk2.9 with the Virtual brain software since inception. I’ve now adopted using Battery 4 with the V3 and I see a ton of potential. What I can’t find anywhere is any documentation on how to make use of the V3’s new functionality with Battery 4. I.e. - slide and pressure sensitivity. Can someone explain how I might make use of these features using battery?

I’d like to be able to, for example, use the pressure sensitivity of one of the rim zones to apply a filter or effect to another rim or center zone. I’d also like to be able to apply automation to zones, such as auto panning and auto filtering. And, of course, I’d like to know how to program the slide functionality. Thanks for any help!

Two ways.
First, you can right click on almost anything that’s a knob or slider and click “Learn midi/automation”. Then use the slide/pressure or midi cc assignment from the V3 utility and that parameter should be now paired. It will show up in the Automation tab under midi (not host automation). Say r9 is midi cc 27. You can program any one and all of your cells to that CC.

Second way is the modulation menu. On the first modulation slot, choose MIDI cc # in the drop down, and select your assigned cc ( you can also assign it to pitch bend message or aftertouch if desired). In the second drop down, choose what you want it to effect. So for example, if you choose filter cutoff on the 2nd modulation drop down, and making sure your filter is “on” (in the effects tab), your midi cc can control a filter on your sample based on how much pressure you apply to, lets say r9 again.

I don’t have my V3s yet but I’ve been imagining how I’ll use all this for years. I can’t say 100% how slide and continuous pressure will work, because i haven’t tinkered yet. But I’ve achieved most of these midi cc things with the v2.0. You need some screen shots ?

And keep in mind that Slide, Position, and Pressure (surface and rims) on the Mandala V3 are MIDI continuous controllers exactly like a mod wheel or a knob or fader is on a MIDI keyboard controller. They are all MIDI controllers that output a range of 0-127. You can assign any of them to parameters in Battery 4.

Take a look at the Modulation Slots section of the Battery 4 Manual here:
https://www.native-instruments.com/ni-t ... ation-page

In the Modulation Source selection menu in Battery 4 you would choose MIDI CC as a source and then set the number to be the controller you want as a source, for example, the default CC numbers for the Mandala V3 are:

Position is MIDI CC 9
Slide is MIDI CC 1
Surface Pressure is MIDI CC 3
Rim Pressures are MIDI CC 111-119

If you are going to use the MIDI Learn functionality in Battery 4 instead please be aware that the Mandala V3 outputs all of its controllers when you engage the surface or rims and you won't be able to choose which one is learned unless you turn the others off when you are doing the MIDI Learn. For that reason it'd be easier for you to just use the Modulation Slots approach as described above and in the Battery 4 Manual.

Hey guys, I hope we get this forum rolling again and see some of the OG's. Ive been using battery 3/4 for a while now and I guess I have the same questions as above. I'm confused as where to start switching over to the new drums and remaking all of my battery kits. I guess its just a matter of assigning cells to zones and like you said, using the modulation features on battery. It's a little overwhelming, I've got a set of 7 to deal with. Please, anyone post your knowledge and I'll do the same and lets support eachother . We've all been waiting so long...
